This week from May 17 through the 23 Windham and the surrounding communities will be taking part in the first annual Schoharie Watershed Week. This fun, educational event will host a number of free workshops and lecture series centered around the continued health and vitality of the mountaintop watershed. In addition to the lectures and workshops, which range in topic from septic health to local ecology, there will be a number of family oriented activities. The Adopt-a-Stream clean-up program will help restore sections of the creeks and rivers around the mountaintop on Friday, May 21. Saturday, May 22 is chock full of fun, family-oriented events and festivities as CD Lane Family Day kicks off at noon with a BBQ, kayaking, canoeing and fly fishing. On the other side of the mountain, the Mountain Top Historical Society will host its Spring Fling and right down the street from CD Lane Park, Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts will be the venue for a workshop on creating rain barrels to conserve water ($10 registration for families). Back in the heart of Windham, the Windham Arts Alliance will be hosting an art show at the Galleria space between Todaro’s Salumeria and Mill Street on Saturday and Sunday, exhibiting works related to water and stream life. And on Saturday, May 29, the Mountaintop Arboretum will host a guided bird walk at 6:30 am. And while you are traveling the mountaintop Memorial Day weekend, be sure to keep you eyes open for a glimpse of the elusive Rip Van Winkle! Fifty statues commissioned by local artists will be displayed around the mountaintop, available for view during the Schoharie Watershed Week.
