WFA at the Affordable Art Fair NYC!
Hello WFA Friends!
The elevators from the loading dock open and I smell fresh paint, mmm, and sawdust, and energy! What goes on behind the scenes of an art fair? A mild sort of chaos, dollies loaded with carefully wrapped packages containing the artists’ and exhibitors’ offerings, the sounds of hammering, chatter between booths: hey - can I borrow that ladder, do you have an extra hammer, wanna anything from the deli?, oof - I forgot the drill (uh, that was me) and much more. My favorite bit of the day yesterday - wandering through the maze of booths and getting first peek at all the artwork from dozens of galleries! I’ve been a regular fair attendee for years and it is a real privilege to see all the people hard at work behind the scenes making a great event happen - from the exhibitors, the building staff, and the fair orgaizers themselves - great job Sarah, Peter, and Rachel (those are the folks I met so far)! I love watching folks hang their booths - curating a space is its own kind of aesthetic and mini- intellectual project - I try to detect an intentional theme, or am I projecting one? Is this space just about showing as much work as we can, or is there a method to the madness? I invite you to think about this as you wander through your next fair experience… But now I must run (ok, fast-walk) over to 34th street - Very excited about previews tonight, seeing friends and finding new ones I haven’t met yet!
