Rip Van Winkle Wakes Up…

Rip VanWinkle sculpture at the Summit of Hunter Mountain

On Hunter Mountain! I went to the top of Hunter Mountain on a recent autumn morning and let me tell you it is worth getting up there for an art experience (let alone the air, the views, the exercise)! Hike it (my dog Hera and I opted for this method) bike it (only for the skilled mountain bike set) or take the Sky Ride (aka the quad) to the top.  You will encounter a life size granite Rip VanWinkle, the literary character who has captured the imagination of those visiting the Catskill mountains for generations! This gem was carved from local bluestone on top of Hunter Mountain by local chisel-wiz, Kevin VanHentenryck and collaborator, David Slutzky. VanHentenryck is a self taught sculptor, highly influenced by Gianlorenzo Bernini. There is a Completion Reception on Monday Oct 12 at 2PM. If you visit during the Oktoberfest celebrations you will be thrilled to see final touches being carved in front of you! BE THERE (I know I will!) If you cannot make it Monday, please put it on your bucket list - this work will be around long after we have left this world, and there is a measure of consolation knowing the handiwork of the artists among us will live on!
